Side Dishes For Lamb: Perfect to Elevate Roasted Lamb

Side Dishes For Lamb: In our family, there is nothing more that screams celebration than a perfectly roasted rack of lamb. Whenever my daughter and husband smell that irresistible aroma of roasted lamb in the kitchen, they already know that we have guests coming over or there is something worth celebrating!

While I already have the perfect roast lamb recipe in my arsenal, one issue that I am having some problems with is finding the perfect side dishes to go for it. I have been mulling over what goes with lamb for quite a while now. In fact, I tried making a few of the recipes, so I already have an idea what works and what doesn’t.

In this article, I will be sharing with you some of the side dishes that have become a big hit in our gatherings! One thing that I have learned is that light side dishes well complement a heavy and filling meal (like a roasted lamb), so most of the recipes you will get to read in this article are made of vegetables.

What Goes with Lamb?

A roasted lamb is sumptuous, but it will take time to prepare. So as you let your lamb roast in the oven, you should take the time to prepare these amazing side dishes!

Citrus Spring Greens

What can be more refreshing and lighter than a plate of spring greens seasoned with lemon and butter, right? I served this during my mom’s birthday, and she absolutely loved it!

For this recipe, I used broad beans, garden peas, asparagus, and courgettes. Boil water in a medium pan and throw in the broad beans and cook it for 8 minutes. Drain the beans and set it aside.

Place the courgettes and asparagus in a steamer and cook for 4 minutes. During the last 2 minutes of steaming, add in the peas. Transfer the still-warm vegetables in a bowl and add butter. Toss the vegetables to coat. Add pepper to taste. Sprinkle lemon zest and pour lemon juice over the vegetables and toss once again.

Creamed Spinach

Greens are the best pairing for roasted lamb, but your greens do not have to be boring! If you do not like anything citrus, you can go for something creamy and cheesy. This creamed spinach recipe may just be what you are looking for!

Pour a few cups of water in a pot and add a bit of salt into it. Bring it to a boil then add the spinach. Cook it for 15 seconds. Drain the hot water and run the spinach it under cold water. Try to squeeze as much excess moisture as possible from the leaves and set it aside.

To make the sauce, place a frying pan over medium heat. Add a few tablespoonfuls of butter and let it melt. Stir in the garlic and onion and cook for 1 minute. Sprinkle flour over the pan and cook it for 3 minutes, stirring it all the time. Add in the half-and-half. Stir it slowly. Cook it for 5 minutes then reduce the heat and cook it for 2 more minutes or until the sauce thickens. Add the nutmeg, pepper, salt, cayenne, mustard, and cheese into the sauce and stir it well. Place the spinach in the pan and mix well.

Lemon Couscous

If you want your side dishes to be on the zesty side, here’s another recipe that you have to try. This lemon couscous recipe would be perfect for lamb chops cooked Moroccan-style.

Pour water in a medium saucepan and bring it to a boil. Add the salt and couscous and stir it for a bit. Turn off the heat and cover the pan. Leave the couscous alone for 5 minutes. It should be fluffy and tender. Add in the preserved lemon and stir it with a fork. You may also mix in sliced bell pepper, parsley, and pine nuts into the rice.

Scalloped Potatoes

Is there something that potatoes cannot complement? Potatoes work well with just about everything—burgers, sandwiches, steaks, and of course—roasted lamb! For a unique potato side dish, you may want to try this recipe.

First, you should whip up the sauce by placing mustard, milk, garlic, butter, and cream. Whisk to combine everything. Once it starts to boil, remove the pan from heat.

Now, you need to get your potatoes ready. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Grease your baking dish and carefully layer the sliced potatoes in it. Add salt and pepper to taste. Pour the sauce mixture over the layered potatoes. Cover the dish with aluminum foil. Place it in the oven and bake it for 1 hour.

Remove the foil and top it with Parmesan cheese and bake it again, uncovered, for 30 to 40 minutes, Serve this one hot!

Sweet Potato Biscuits

Potatoes are delicious and versatile but let us not forget about the fact that they are laden with carbohydrates. If you are on a diet, you may want to try a healthier alternative—sweet potato. This sweet potato biscuit recipe is sweet and moist and is the perfect complement to the tanginess and heaviness of roasted lamb.

Place the rack in the middle and preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Combine the baking powder, granulated sugar, all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt in one bowl. Grate frozen butter over the dry ingredients and toss it well.

In another bowl, place the mashed potato and milk and mix well. Add in the milk mixture and mix to form a dough.

Knead the mixture in a floured surface for 30 seconds. Form it into a circle and use a floured rolling pin to roll out the dough. Cut circles into the dough using a cookie cutter. Arrange the biscuits on a baking sheet and brush it with heavy cream. Bake for 15 minutes.

Fennel and Strawberry Salad

Of course, there has to be salad on this list! After all, how can I miss it, right? But this recipe has balsamic vinegar and strawberry slices which add an exciting twist to it.

In a bowl, whisk balsamic vinegar, champagne vinegar, shallots, salt, and pepper altogether. While whisking, gradually add the olive oil. Continue whisking until it is fully incorporated.

In a separate bowl, place the fennel, salt, and pepper and toss to coat. Add in the pine nuts, strawberry slices, and arugula and stir once again. Pour the vinaigrette over the salad and gently toss it. Add shaved cheese, salt, and pepper to taste.
